Will I See People I Know When Dating Online?

Hiding online“Oh my gosh, did you guys hear the news? Becky is dating online. What a nerd!!!”

How many times have you heard this in your life? The answer is probably zero times. How many times has this scenario played out in your head, though? Probably more than zero times. Our brains are impressively powerful and sometimes impressively “stupid” parts of our bodies. We have a tendency to see the worst, imagine the most terrible possible outcome, and happily, throw all of our logic to the wind.

Before we get into answer our question, we want to address something even more important. Does it really matter if someone you know sees you online dating? The answer should be a resounding, “No! It does not matter at all!” You see, online dating no longer has this creepy stigma that means you’re instantly a weirdo for using it.

There is NOTHING wrong with trying to find love. There is NOTHING wrong with using technology to help you find love. In fact, people should respect you for being intelligent enough to use available technologies to get what you want.

Here’s another thing you should realize. Pardon our language, but we call it the “sex shop analogy.” Worried about someone catching you in an adult store? Well, the only way that someone can catch you in the adult store is if they are in the adult store as well. Basically, the only way that someone would “catch” you dating online is if they were dating online themselves. It’s really hard to give someone a hard time about something that you are also doing.

Even then, it’s only in your head that people are going to give you a hard time or a ribbing about dating online. It’s so mainstream these days that you have nothing to worry about.

So, Will I See People I Know?

Sorry for our tangent, but as you can probably tell, it was important. Arguably more important than the answer to our title question. Back on task now! Will you see people that you know when you’re dating online? You might. It all depends on whether or not your acquaintances are dating as well, how big your town is, and if you have the same interests.

Most likely unless you’re gay, you’re never going to see anyone of the same gender. When you date online, you only see your potential matches and none of your “competition” (if that’s the right word). Outside of that, it’s really a numbers game. If you live in any decently sized city or area with a lot of cities close by, you’re going to have thousands and thousands of people dating. Additionally, there are tons of different sites operating in every city in the world which means your odds are going to be even lower.

So, basically, someone you know has to happen to be a member of the same site that you are, and you have to happen to stumble across them amongst thousands and thousands of other profiles. If we had to say whether it was likely or not to see someone you know (or for them to see you), we’d probably say it’s less likely but does happen. The writer of this article dated online for three years off and on and never saw a single person they knew. That certainly doesn’t mean that you won’t, but it’s certainly less likely that it is likely unless you live in a super small town.

What Is The Takeaway Here?

So, what does all of this actually mean for you and your online dating career? You should be taking a few things away from this. First, you should realize that it’s a low probability that you will see anyone you know while dating online, but it is certainly possible. The second and more important thing that you should take away from this post is that it shouldn’t matter at all!

Trying to find love is a noble cause and not one you should be ashamed of. Using technology to complete this task doesn’t make you silly, but it makes you smart and resourceful. The only place that you’re going to get made fun of for dating online is inside your own head. People are not going to give you a hard time for it.

And, if for some reason someone does, just ignore them. They are clearly sad and have their own issues that they’re trying to take out on you. Don’t let their issues and insecurities get in your way of finding happiness.
